Book Week/National Literacy Day Celebrations “Connect to Reading”

On Monday 25 August the Junior School spent the day Connected and Connecting to Reading!

During the morning session all K-6 students attended a Musical Presentation called “Worlds Apart” which was based on some of the Short Listed CBCA books for 2014. It was obvious the class teachers had prepared the students well by reading and discussing the books prior to the event. The students really enjoyed the performance, many were enraptured throughout, and one boy begged us to bring them back every year!

After lunch Mr Russell Matheson MP, Federal Member for Macarthur, visited Kindergarten and presented each student with a book in honour of Book Week. He talked with the students and then read them a story.

Following this a “Grand Parade of Masks” was held in the COLA. The masks depicted books the students had read together as a class.

The Senior Students spent their ‘study’ and lunch times putting together a jigsaw puzzle taken from the ‘L’ (Library) page of the Graeme Base book Animalia

National Simultaneous Storytime 21 May 2014
Our three Kindergarten classes came to the IRC to take part in this year’s National Simultaneous Storytime event. The book Too Many Elephants in This House written by Ursula Dubosarsky and illustrated by Andrew Joyner was featured but first we found that the IRC has a lot of elephants ‘hiding in it’. Some books were about elephants but some had them hidden inside! These were shown on the Whiteboard using a Lumens Projector.
Year 12 commented that they always had to squint to see picture books in Kindergarten and that this was a great invention!
After a search for the books hidden under the bookshelves, students watched the story via YouTube on the Interactive White Board then watched again with their ‘Elephant masks’ trumpeting at appropriate, and sometimes inappropriate, times!
A great time was had by all – especially the Year 12 students who should have been studying.

Library Lovers’ Day – 14 February 2014
All Year 8 English classes spent one period in the IRC getting acquainted with good books – many genres and styles of writing. By the end of a number of brief meetings students were ready to go a step further and borrow a good book!
